Hi everyone,
Hope you're all settling in to the unit well by now. For those new to Macquarie, hopefully you're finding your feet and starting to enjoy being part of this vibrant community.
In Week 2, we made a great start on our first module: Ethics, Governance and Justice. I have seen some fascinating discussions around the disjunction between what is legal and what is just. Keep up the good work!
In Week 3, we will deepen our understanding of this theme. We will also consider our Northern Territory Intervention case study from the perspective of another discipline within the Faculty of Arts: Criminology and Security Studies.
Next week we will also look at a second case study for the module: LGBTQIA+ rights. You will listen to a fascinating guest lecture from Dr Leigh Boucher, who teaches in the Modern History department.
Our week 3 lecture and tutorial will continue to prepare you for Skills Portfolio 1. In the week 3 tutorial, you'll have the opportunity to mark two SP1 assignments by former ARTS1000 students. This will definitely give you a sense of what a good reflection looks like (and also maybe some things you should avoid!). In week 3 tutorials we will also do some initial preparations for our mentoring task (which runs from weeks 5-8).
In week 3, please also remember to complete our first self-guided learning module (included as part of the preparatory materials). These modules will help first year students prepare for independent study at University. The materials you generate through these modules will also help you with our mentoring task.
That's it from me for week 2. Have a great weekend!
James
